VRT builds the foundation for the future with a modern IP-based broadcast infrastructure

Summary

Organisation: VRT

Challenge: Make the transition from baseband to IP possible.

Solution: To support the new infrastructure, VRT selected synchronization solutions from Meinberg and Telestream, supplied and implemented by CN Rood.

As the public broadcaster of Flanders, VRT informs, inspires, and connects millions of viewers and listeners every day. To support its future ambitions, VRT is currently building a new headquarters on the Reyers site in Brussels, with the first stone laid in 2023 and the move planned for 2027. The new building is much more than a modern workplace. It is also the catalyst for a complete technological transformation. As Tom Noels, Project Manager Real-Time Media Network, explains: “This new SMPTE 2110 network will make the transition from baseband to IP possible.” Through this new infrastructure, all real-time uncompressed audio and video signals will be transported over IP, enabling significantly greater flexibility and scalability across the organization.

The challenge

Transitioning to IP while maintaining perfect timing

Moving from traditional baseband infrastructure to a fully IP-based SMPTE ST 2110 environment represents a major technological shift. The new infrastructure will allow studios, control rooms, and broadcast equipment to be used much more flexibly, while supporting future growth and software-based workflows. According to Tom Noels, “By switching to IP for our real-time audio and video streams, we are not only ready for the future but can also use both rooms and equipment much more flexibly and efficient.”

At the same time, the transition introduces new challenges. In a SMPTE ST 2110 environment, audio, video, and metadata are transported as separate streams that must be perfectly synchronized to reconstruct the final signal. As Tom emphasizes: “Correct timing is essential to bring signals back together flawlessly. It is not an optional feature, but an absolute requirement.” In addition, VRT needed to support both modern PTP synchronization and a limited number of legacy synchronization signals for existing baseband equipment during the migration period.

The solution

Combining Meinberg precision with Telestream reliability

To support the new infrastructure, VRT selected synchronization solutions from Meinberg and Telestream, supplied and implemented by CN Rood. Following a public tender process, CN Rood was awarded both the modernization of the PTP environment and the renewal of the legacy synchronization infrastructure.

The new timing architecture combines a modern PTP environment based on Meinberg technology with Telestream solutions for legacy synchronization requirements. This approach allows VRT to support the majority of its future IP infrastructure while maintaining compatibility with remaining baseband systems. Tom explains: “The majority of the infrastructure will use the PTP environment. However, some baseband equipment will remain present, which is why we will continue to provide legacy synchronization as well.” The new platform also supports alternative timing sources, creating a future-proof foundation for evolving requirements around resilience, anti-jamming, and anti-spoofing capabilities.

The result

Ready for a more flexible and scalable broadcast future

The new synchronization infrastructure provides VRT with the timing foundation required for the big technology transformation. By combining SMPTE ST 2110 networking with modern synchronization technologies, VRT is creating an environment where media can be produced from anywhere within the building, while resources such as studios and control rooms can be shared much more efficiently.

The project has also reinforced the value of a strong technology partnership. Reflecting on the collaboration, Tom Noels says: “At this moment I am very satisfied with the cooperation. I appreciate the open communication, the good accessibility, and the fast response.” He adds that VRT highly values “the expertise that is available and the products that do what they are supposed to do.” Together, VRT, CN Rood, Meinberg, and Telestream are laying the technological groundwork for the next generation of broadcasting in Flanders.
