Project
UZ Brussel enhances patient safety and equipment reliability with Fluke Biomedical solutions
Summary
Organisation: UZ Brussel
Challenge: Ensure that critical medical equipment remains safe, reliable, and available.
Solution: To support these activities, UZ Brussel relies on test and measurement solutions from Fluke Biomedical, supplied and supported by CN Rood.
UZ Brussel is a leading university hospital with more than 700 beds, known for its high-tech healthcare services, ranging from complex cardiovascular interventions and oncology treatments to its internationally renowned Brussels IVF fertility clinic. Behind this advanced care environment stands the hospital’s Biotechnics department, responsible for ensuring that critical medical equipment remains safe, reliable, and available. To support these activities, UZ Brussel relies on test and measurement solutions from Fluke Biomedical, supplied and supported by CN Rood. As biotechnician Ruben Kemels explains: “Doctors and nurses focus on the patient, and together with my colleagues I make sure that technology never lets them down.” Whether it concerns a blood pressure monitor, a ventilator in intensive care, or a life-saving defibrillator, the team acts as “the link between medical technology and the end users.”
The challenge
Keeping increasingly complex medical equipment safe and operational
For the Biotechnics department, patient safety and equipment uptime are top priorities. According to Ruben, “safe use comes first, combined with keeping all equipment operational.” At the same time, maintaining modern medical equipment is becoming increasingly demanding. “Devices are becoming more complex and are more often connected to the network to share data with each other or with the electronic patient record,” he explains. This requires additional technical expertise and close collaboration with the hospital’s IT department.
At the same time, there is virtually no room for downtime. Equipment used in operating rooms and intensive care units must remain available at all times. Maintenance and testing need to be performed efficiently, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and accuracy. As Ruben emphasizes: “The risks are simply too great. If a monitor reports incorrect vital parameters due to faulty calibration, a doctor may make the wrong decision.” Even electrical safety issues such as leakage currents can have serious consequences for vulnerable patients.
The solution
Comprehensive testing with Fluke Biomedical and support from CN Rood
To ensure the safety and performance of its medical equipment, UZ Brussel relies on a wide range of solutions from Fluke Biomedical, supplied and supported by CN Rood. The hospital uses ESA620 and ESA715 for electrical safety testing, while ProSim 8 patient simulators are used to verify monitor performance by accurately simulating vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure.
Additional equipment includes the VT900A for gas flow and volume measurements, the IDA-6 for infusion pump testing, the Impulse 7000DP for defibrillator verification, the QA-ES II for electrosurgical equipment testing, and the INCU II for incubator validation. Many of these devices are integrated with OneQA software to automate test procedures and digitally document results. Ruben explains: “That helps us automate test procedures and document test reports directly, which increases efficiency enormously.”
The choice for Fluke Biomedical was straightforward. “Fluke is simply the gold standard in our world,” says Ruben. “The instruments are extremely robust, intuitive to use, and provide stable, reproducible measurement results that technicians can fully trust.”
The result
Faster workflows, reliable compliance, and greater confidence
The implementation of Fluke Biomedical test equipment has significantly improved efficiency and consistency within the Biotechnics department. According to Ruben, “It has mainly made our work faster and more consistent.” Automated test sequences allow technicians to complete inspections more efficiently, reducing the time equipment spends in the workshop and enabling faster return to clinical use. Digital reporting also ensures that test documentation is immediately available after inspections.
