Project
Advancing GW-Scale Green Hydrogen Integration Through Real-Time Simulation
Summary
Organisation: International Energy Company
Challenge: Integrating renewable energy, battery storage and electrolysers into reliable gigawatt-scale green hydrogen systems requires managing complex interactions and identifying potential technical risks early.
Solution: Real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing enable engineers to validate system performance, assess interactions and identify potential issues before physical deployment.
As the energy transition accelerates, integrating large-scale renewable energy sources with green hydrogen production is becoming increasingly important. Developing reliable power-to-hydrogen systems requires the seamless integration of multiple technologies, including renewable generation, energy storage and electrolysis.
To address these engineering challenges, an international energy company implemented advanced real-time simulation technology from RTDS Technologies, delivered and supported by CN Rood. The solution enables engineers to investigate complex system interactions, validate control strategies and identify potential technical challenges before deploying gigawatt-scale, off-grid green hydrogen facilities.
The challenge
Managing Complexity at Gigawatt Scale
Designing large-scale green hydrogen facilities involves integrating multiple energy technologies into a stable and reliable system. These configurations may combine wind and solar generation, battery energy storage, grid infrastructure and electrolyser systems. Each technology introduces specific operating characteristics and control requirements. Understanding how these components interact under different operating conditions is essential to assessing system stability, reliability and scalability. A key challenge is identifying potential technical bottlenecks and system-level risks early in the development process. Addressing these issues before implementation can help reduce engineering uncertainties and support more effective project planning.
The solution
Real-Time Simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing
To support system development and validation, the company adopted a real-time simulation environment based on RTDS Technologies solutions, supplied and supported by CN Rood.
The platform enables engineers to simulate complex power system behaviour in real time and assess how different components interact under realistic operating conditions. Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing further allows physical control equipment to be connected to the simulated environment, providing valuable insights into control performance and system response.
By combining real-time simulation with HIL testing, engineers can evaluate different operating scenarios, investigate potential failure modes and assess mitigation strategies in a controlled environment. This approach supports early identification of technical challenges and helps validate system architectures before moving towards physical implementation.
The result
Earlier Risk Identification and Better-Informed Decisions
The real-time simulation environment provides an effective foundation for evaluating gigawatt-scale green hydrogen concepts and identifying potential project-critical issues at an early stage.
Engineers can use the platform to assess system interactions, investigate possible bottlenecks and explore mitigation measures before these challenges affect deployment. This supports more informed engineering decisions and helps reduce uncertainty during the development of complex renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure.
CN Rood contributed to the implementation by delivering the simulation system according to the project schedule and coordinating dedicated training in collaboration with RTDS Technologies. This support helped establish the simulation environment and build the knowledge required to use the technology effectively.
The project demonstrates how real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing can support the development of large-scale green hydrogen facilities, helping engineering teams address integration challenges and prepare complex energy systems for future deployment.
